Benchmarking to UPM, GPMPR FIKP Unhas Prepared to Improve UI GreenMetric Rating

On November 26, 2024, the Quality Assurance and Reputation Improvement Unit of the Faculty of Marine Science and Fisheries, Hasanuddin University (GPMPR FIKP Unhas) carried out benchmarking activities to Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). This activity focused on the management and implementation of environmental sustainability programs within the framework of UI GreenMetric, a global environment-based university ranking system. This event is part of the efforts of GPMPR FIKP Unhas to improve the quality of environmentally sound campus governance.

The visit was led by the Head of the Quality Assurance and Reputation Improvement Unit of FIKP Unhas (Dr. Nursinah Amir, S.Pi., MP., accompanied by the Secretary of GPMPR (Dr. Yayu A. Lanafie, ST., M.Sc.), ISO FIKP Coordinator (Kasri, S.Pi., M.Si.), and UI Green Metric FIKP Admin (Muh. Iqbal Tawakal, S.Kom). The delegation was warmly welcomed by UPM representative Assoc. Prof. TS. Dr. Nur Izura Udzir and Nor Shazwani Izyan Ayub, who gave an in-depth presentation on the campus strategy in improving the UI GreenMetric ranking, including innovations in energy management, water conservation, and green space optimization. UPM, as one of the highly ranked campuses in UI GreenMetric, shared its experiences and best practices with the delegates from Unhas.

In the discussion session, both institutions discussed the importance of international collaboration in promoting campus sustainability. UPM representatives explained the role of data-driven decision-making in managing campus resources, while GPMPR FIKP Unhas explained the faculty’s flagship programs relevant to sustainability, such as sustainable coastal ecosystem management. This activity also opened up opportunities for research cooperation between the two universities, especially in the fields of sustainability and fisheries resource management.

In addition to formal discussions, the Unhas delegation was also invited to tour to see environmentally friendly facilities at UPM, such as waste treatment systems, the use of renewable energy (solar panels), and campus parks designed with ecological principles. This experience inspired GPMPR FIKP Unhas to develop similar initiatives on campus, in line with the university’s vision to become a pioneer of sustainability in the Southeast Asia region.

The Head of GPMPR FIKP Unhas expressed his appreciation for the welcome and knowledge provided by UPM. He emphasized that the results of this benchmarking will be the basis for designing strategies to improve environmental quality at Hasanuddin University, especially on aspects assessed by UI GreenMetric. “We hope that through this learning, FIKP Unhas can contribute more in realizing a green campus that supports sustainable development,” he concluded.
